It opened on March 15, 1999, with 1,740 rooms across a 29-floor tower standing 346 feet tall, making it the largest hotel/casino in the United States outside of Nevada at the time. Mississippi law required the casino itself to operate on floating barges in those early years, with the hotel, restaurants, and parking built on land. That changed after Hurricane Katrina's 30-foot storm surge seriously damaged the property on August 29, 2005 -- the casino barge took the worst of it, though the hotel tower survived relatively unscathed. Rebuilt by original contractor W.G. Yates & Sons Construction and more than 50 subcontractors, Beau Rivage reopened on August 29, 2006, exactly one year after the storm.
