The site has a longer, more complicated history than the December 7, 2014 opening date suggests. Pinnacle Entertainment first proposed a casino resort called 'Sugarcane Bay' for the site in 2006, a $350 million project it canceled in 2010 and returned the gaming license for. Creative Casinos LLC, led by former Pinnacle chairman Dan Lee, picked up the license in February 2011 for a $400 million project called 'Mojito Pointe.' Ameristar Casinos bought Creative Casinos in June 2012 for $32.5 million and renamed the project 'Ameristar Lake Charles' -- but when Pinnacle agreed to acquire Ameristar that December, federal antitrust regulators forced the sale of the Lake Charles project specifically, and it went to Landry's, Inc., owned by Tilman J. Fertitta. Construction topped out on the 25-story accommodations tower in December 2013, with Fertitta investing more than $600 million total, making it one of the most expensive construction projects underway in the US at the time. The finished 242-acre resort includes 1,038 guest rooms, an 18-hole golf course, and a private marina and beach alongside the casino floor.
