The building has a longer, rougher history than its current Hard Rock branding suggests. It opened on April 2, 1990, as the Trump Taj Mahal, after Donald Trump bought the partially built property from Resorts International in 1988 for $273 million and financed its completion with $675 million in junk bonds, bringing the total cost to nearly $1 billion -- at the time promoted as the largest casino in the world. The property filed for prepackaged bankruptcy within a year of opening, in 1991, giving bondholders a 50% stake. A Chairman Tower addition in 2008 pushed the property past 2,000 rooms, but Trump Entertainment Resorts filed Chapter 11 again in 2014, and the casino nearly closed before investor Carl Icahn committed $20 million to keep it running. That reprieve didn't last: the property closed permanently on October 10, 2016. Hard Rock International announced a $300 million purchase and renovation plan on March 1, 2017, and the property reopened as Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City on June 27, 2018, under joint ownership between Hard Rock International and the Morris and Jingoli families -- the ownership and branding that runs the floor described above today.
